A pair of exotic armchairs inspired by the Regency style, very much in spirit of George Smith (circa 1805) designs published in “A collection of Design of Household Furniture”. The chairs feature a padded back, arms and drop-in seat beautifully upholstered in off white and beige damask fabric.
The arms are supported by meticulously carved lion monopodia - decorative supports consisting of the head and one leg of a lion. First seen in Roman furniture; the monopodia was revived during the late eighteenth century by neoclassical designers such as Thomas Hope in his 1807 publication Household Furniture and Interior Decoration. The use of these classical design elements helped to establish the ‘English Empire’ element in Regency furniture. The chairs are handmade and hand finished in solid rosewood.
